History of Cameron Title
The history of Cameron Title Company Inc. had its beginning as W.H.S. McGlumphy Abstract and Title Company. He prepared the famous McGlumphy Atlas in 1921 which shows he owned property on Chestnut south of Seminary Avenue described as Lot 11, Sunnyside Addition. He acknowledges in his atlas that he came to Cameron in 1919.
Arthur Barlow and his wife, Lola, who lived at Fourth and Main streets became the next owner and continued his ownership until it was purchased by Russell and Llily Johnston. The exact date of purchase is not known, but from the records it appears to be 1969.
Russell and Lilly operated the abstract business for several years, then Lilly took over the abstracting and Russell became Clinton County Engineer. They commenced business in the north part of the Cameron Savings and Loan building at Third and Main Streets. They acquired the property at Seventh and Locust streets in 1950 where Lilly operated the business until it was sold the Michael Poland and Steven Griffin Law Office. When Mike Poland went to Farmers State Bank as president and Steven Griffin became circuit court judge, the title company was sold to Daniel Galloway.
In January 1989, Cameron Title Company was sold to Donald and Joan Kimball. They formed the Cameron Title Company Inc. on April 1, 1989 and moved to 1317 Walnut with the law offices of Heavner, Jarrett, and Kimball.
Abstracting is becoming a thing of the past as title insurance has become the guarantee of good marketable title in most counties. Cameron Title Inc. must continue to search the records to determine if the records list any exceptions, mortgages, tax liens, mechanic's liens, judgments or encroachments before they will issue a title commitment. Cameron Title Company Inc has in its office the county records for Clinton DeKalb counties for more than fifty years.
Vicki Peacher is the president of the Cameron Title Company Inc., and Rachel James is the office manager. They work together searching the records of Clinton and DeKalb County to determine how real estate is encumbered and restricted. All financial institutions require this information before they will commit to finance or purchase a piece of real estate property.
The Cameron Title Company Inc now has a office in Chillicothe, Missouri called Livingston County Title Company where they provide the same services for those interested in Livingston County.
After working for Cameron Title Co., Inc for 15 years, Vicki Peacher decided to open a new company in Chillicothe, Livingston County, Missouri.
